This feature prevents
motor burn out from overdrive under all circumstances. The SST servo drive
calculates the true RMS current in the motor and shuts down the drive
when a user-definable limit is exceeded. This method will not be fooled
by oscillation or miswired sensors like other protection methods (such
as the common current-time (I-T) alarm).
In
fact, true RMS torque protection is actually more reliable than a motor
thermostat because it operates more rapidly and isn’t limited to one physical
measurement point. (The SST does, however, support a thermostat input
if you should desire to use one).
This
feature allows you to build more reliable machines that also use nearly
the full capability of the motor. In general, combined with the IMT, this
feature allows you to use smaller motors than competing servo solutions,
giving you more design flexibility.
